Roller Hearth or Pusher Kiln? Choosing for Zirconia and LFP Sintering

Both handle continuous high-temperature sintering. The difference is how the load moves, and that decides which one fits your material.

Both roller hearth kilns and pusher kilns perform continuous high-temperature sintering, and both are atmosphere furnaces. There is really only one structural difference: how the load moves through the furnace.

That single difference decides which one suits your material.

1. How each furnace moves the load

An atmosphere roller hearth kiln uses a closely spaced bed of rotating rollers to carry saggers continuously through successive heating zones. The load rolls through.

An atmosphere pusher kiln uses a pusher mechanism, hydraulic or mechanical, to advance the load in steps. The load is pushed through.

Two consequences follow. Roller transport is gentler, which suits powders sensitive to vibration. Pusher transport generates more force, so it carries heavier loads.

3. When to choose a roller hearth kiln

Choose roller hearth first if your material matches these conditions:

Zirconia and LFP are currently the two dominant roller hearth applications. The roller hearth kiln is designed specifically for sintering these materials, with high control precision, large output, low energy consumption and a high product qualification rate.

4. When to choose a pusher kiln

Choose pusher first if your material matches these:

In the high-temperature zone, the pusher kiln uses special corundum-mullite material for high strength and long service life. The insulation layer uses an alumina hollow-ball castable formula that inhibits high-temperature diffusion through the side wall. The furnace floor uses a slot-drawing hollow spherical brick structure that extends the hot end of the molybdenum disilicide elements below the pusher plate.

5. When both could work

Some cases support either furnace. Decide on three points:

  1. Load form: powders go roller hearth, formed parts go pusher
  2. Temperature requirement: below 1500 °C roller hearth is sufficient; above that, consider pusher
  3. Production planning: frequent product changes favour roller hearth; long runs of a fixed product favour pusher

If it is still unclear, send us your material, temperature profile and throughput target, and our engineers will prepare a comparison.
