High-temperature electric furnaces are used for sintering, annealing, tempering and normalizing experiments and production. Used correctly, they are safe and reliable. Used incorrectly, they can damage the furnace and put operators at risk. Here are the five mistakes we see most often — and how to avoid them.
Before every run, inspect the furnace chamber for metal filings, scale or other residue. Loose conductive debris can fall and cause a short circuit. Clean the chamber thoroughly before loading workpieces.
Never let the furnace come into contact with water, become damp, or sit in direct sunlight. Do not scratch the body with sharp tools. If a scratch appears, touch up the paint promptly to prevent rust from spreading under the coating.
Do not open the door while the furnace is running. Opening the door breaks the temperature field and can damage both the heating elements and the workpiece. Also make sure workpieces and thermocouples never touch the heating elements or each other — keep a safe distance.
Never heat materials with explosion risk in the chamber. Easily melting materials must be placed in a crucible — otherwise they will melt and stick to the chamber lining, damaging the furnace.
Do not place paper, plastic or sharp tools on top of the furnace body. The surface gets hot and these items create fire and injury hazards.
