Roller Hearth Furnaces: Features, Advantages and Best Practices

September 8, 2026 4 min read ZKR Thermal Engineering

A roller hearth furnace (roller hearth kiln) is a continuous, flow-line kiln designed for the sintering of zirconia, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO ₄), ceramics, rare-earth materials, high-grade refractories and rare-metal phosphors. It offers high control accuracy, large output, low energy consumption, high product yield and reliable operation.

Roller hearth kilns are used in ceramics, metallurgy, refractories, chemical engineering, powder materials and non-ferrous metals. The product travels on closely spaced horizontal refractory rollers from the kiln head to the kiln tail — which is why it is called a “roller hearth” kiln. With a relatively small cross-section and uniform in-chamber temperature, it is well suited to rapid firing.

Key design features

Why customers choose roller hearth furnaces

  1. Fast firing, uniform temperature. Thanks to the small cross-section and heating from both above and below the rollers, the temperature difference between top and bottom normally stays within 5°C — ideal for rapid firing and consistent product quality (e.g. uniform, bright glaze on decoration ware).
  2. Significant fuel savings. No kiln cars or saggars are needed — only lightweight refractory pads, and sometimes none at all — so heat consumption drops substantially.
  3. Easy automation. Loading, firing, cooling and unloading can be mechanized and connected into a complete continuous production line, raising overall efficiency.
  4. Simple structure, lower cost. Easy to maintain and operate, with a lower capital investment than equivalent tunnel kilns.
  5. Better working conditions. Reduced labor intensity and a cleaner working environment.

If you are processing powders, ceramics or battery materials in high volume, a roller hearth furnace may be the most economical continuous solution for your line. Send us your material and capacity requirements for a configuration recommendation.
